Claude Duet vs OpenAI Dots (2026): Features, Access & Which Agent Fits Your Work?

Claude Duet and OpenAI Dots are two examples of a shift from prompt-and-response chatbots toward AI agents that keep working between conversations. Both can use connected apps, carry context across tasks, and bring decisions back to a person. Their approaches are not identical, and access restrictions matter as much as the feature lists.
Our take: Claude Duet is positioned as a proactive personal work assistant built around the Claude account and its connectors. OpenAI Dots are persistent agents inside ChatGPT, with a cloud computer, optional local-computer access, scheduled tasks, and messaging across supported channels. Neither is a universal automation platform, and both require careful permission management.
Availability checked November 1, 2026. Both products are still rolling out, so the access and feature details below should be rechecked before making a purchasing decision.

What is Claude Duet?
Claude Duet is Anthropic’s proactive agent app. You can message it by text or voice, then hand over work that can continue after you close the app. Anthropic describes a morning brief that scans connected email and calendar information, drafts next steps for review, follows quiet threads, and returns larger deliverables such as research briefs, financial models, slide decks, and dashboards.
Duet reuses the memory, skills, and connectors configured in your Claude account. Its support documentation lists integrations such as Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Drive, Slack, QuickBooks, HubSpot, DocuSign, and Calendly. It can also use its own cloud browser for websites without a dedicated connector. It runs on Claude Opus 5.5 during the preview, and users cannot choose a different model.

What are OpenAI Dots?
OpenAI Dots are always-on agents in ChatGPT that can take responsibility for an ongoing objective. OpenAI says they have their own cloud computer and browser, can use supported connected apps, and can keep making progress between conversations. The product is designed for longer-running projects rather than a single answer.
Dots can message users in ChatGPT and supported Slack or Teams channels. They can research proactively, run scheduled tasks, and produce work for review. Users can define Custom Rules to allow actions, require approval, ask before acting, or hand a decision back to a person. A connected local computer is optional and starts turned off; local access must be explicitly enabled in the desktop app.
For a fuller feature overview, see Aiverio’s OpenAI Dots review.
1. Background work and proactive follow-up
Claude Duet: its distinctive workflow is a daily brief and task follow-through. It reviews the connected information you authorize, highlights what needs attention, and prepares next steps. It checks accounts at set intervals, so it is not an instant alerting system.
OpenAI Dots: emphasizes persistent goals, proactive research, and scheduled tasks. OpenAI documents background research over connected information and recurring checks that can be paused or managed from the Dot’s profile.
Practical difference: choose Duet when a morning work brief and email/calendar follow-up are the main job. Consider Dots when you want one agent to carry a broader project across multiple work sessions, including research, content, or software tasks.
2. Computer use and connected applications
Both products have a cloud computer and browser, but their current levels of user visibility differ. Anthropic says Duet users cannot watch or take over its browser while it works. OpenAI says Dots users can open their Dot’s computer to inspect its work. Dots can also be connected to a user’s own computer, but that access is optional and requires explicit permission in the desktop app.
For connected apps, both rely on permissions granted by the user. Duet can use the connectors already configured in Claude. Dots use supported ChatGPT apps and plugins, and can carry context across ChatGPT and supported messaging channels. Available connectors and actions vary by account and region; do not assume an app connection grants permission to perform every action.
3. Approvals, security, and privacy
Claude Duet is designed to ask before consequential actions such as sending messages, making payments, signing documents, or deleting information. Anthropic also notes that it can misread a thread or misjudge urgency, and that prompt injection is a real risk when an agent reads email and web content.
Dots use Custom Rules to decide whether an action can proceed, needs pre-approval, requires a fresh approval, or must be handed to the user. OpenAI describes built-in safety checks and an activity view for monitoring work. OpenAI also notes that disconnecting an app does not automatically erase information a Dot has already obtained from it.
Neither product should receive broad account access without a reason. Start with read-only permissions where possible, connect only the apps needed for a task, and require approval for sending, spending, deleting, or changing account data. Review important outputs rather than treating the agent’s work as authoritative.
4. Price and usage limits
Claude Duet is included at no additional subscription charge with eligible Claude Pro and Max plans during its research preview. However, its background work and larger tasks count against the plan’s five-hour session and weekly usage limits. The more frequently it checks accounts or handles large jobs, the faster it can consume the available allowance.
OpenAI says the first Dot is included with eligible Pro or Business Premium plans at no extra cost. The plan also includes an allowance for deeper work. Ordinary conversations with a Dot do not count toward ChatGPT usage limits, while tasks that it starts or manages in ChatGPT Work or Codex count against those products’ normal limits. Enterprise access is a beta that administrators must enable.
These are not simple unlimited-free offers. Before adopting either agent, estimate how much background activity it will run, which tasks use deeper work, and whether the included allowance matches your workload.
5. Availability: the biggest decision factor
Claude Duet is a US-only research preview for invited Claude Pro and Max users, according to Anthropic’s current English support documentation. Access is through a waitlist and invitations are sent gradually. Team and Enterprise plans are not included in the current preview documentation.
OpenAI Dots are rolling out to ChatGPT Pro users aged 18 and older in supported markets, excluding the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. Business Premium users may be eligible in supported ChatGPT regions, and Enterprise users can access the beta when their administrator enables it. Availability is gradual and workspace requirements can affect access.
For readers in France or elsewhere in the EEA, Claude Duet’s preview is currently US-only, and ChatGPT Pro Dots are excluded from the EEA rollout. That means neither should be treated as a generally available consumer option in those locations today. Business-plan eligibility is separate and should be verified with the provider.
Which one is better for your workflow?
| Your priority | Better starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Daily email and calendar briefing | Claude Duet | Its preview workflow explicitly emphasizes morning briefs and inbox/calendar follow-through. |
| Long-running multi-step projects | OpenAI Dots | Persistent goals, proactive research, scheduled tasks, and multi-project work are central to the product. |
| Inspecting an agent’s cloud computer | OpenAI Dots | OpenAI documents access to the Dot’s computer; Duet’s current preview does not allow live browser takeover. |
| Working inside an existing Claude setup | Claude Duet | It reuses Claude memory, skills, and connectors. |
| Optional local-computer access | OpenAI Dots | Dots can use a connected local computer after the user explicitly enables access. |
| Immediate availability outside the US | Neither consumer preview is a safe assumption | Both have regional and plan restrictions that need to be checked first. |
How to test either agent safely
- Choose one low-risk, repeatable task, such as preparing a daily summary from a read-only calendar or drafting a weekly research brief.
- Connect only the services needed for that task. Avoid broad access to email, files, payments, or business systems at the start.
- Tell the agent what it may read, what it may create, and which actions always require approval.
- Run the same task several times and record accuracy, completion time, useful findings, missed items, and human correction time.
- Measure usage consumed by background work and large deliverables, not just the visible number of prompts.
- Expand permissions only after the agent performs reliably on representative tasks.
Final verdict
Claude Duet and OpenAI Dots are not interchangeable chatbots. Duet’s clearest strength is the personal work-assistant loop: morning briefs, connected-app follow-up, and reviewable deliverables that fit into an existing Claude account. Dots put more emphasis on persistent project work, scheduled tasks, a visible cloud computer, messaging across supported channels, and optional local-computer access.
There is no universal winner. Your existing ecosystem, the specific task, the visibility you need into computer use, and regional eligibility should decide the choice. For many readers, the first step is simply checking whether either preview is actually available to their plan and country.
